Radius-TWC acquires ‘The Expatriate’: AFM title stars Aaron Eckhart, Olga Kurylenko

Radius-TWC has acquired domestic distribution rights to “The Expatriate” starring Aaron Eckhart.

Directed by Philipp Stolzl from Arash Amel’s script, pic centers on an ex-CIA agent and his daughter on the run when his employers mark them both for termination as part of a wide-reaching international conspiracy.

Olga Kurylenko and Liana Liberato also star with Howard Meltzer, Jonathan Vanger, Claude Lenger and Karl Richards producing. Harry Winer, Judy and Michael Cairo are exec producing.

International sales are still ongoing through Essential Media. A 2012 release date is likely.

“It’s ‘Bourne’ meets ‘Taken’ with Aaron Eckhart at his very best,” said Radius-TWC co-president Tom Quinn. “It’s perfect for us … I’m really excited about it and look forward to premiering it this fall.”

Quinn and Radius-TWC co-prexy Jason Janego brokered the deal on behalf of the label. CAA repped domestic rights on behalf of Informant Media, Smash Media Films and Essential Entertainment.

Radius-TWC, a distribution entity within The Weinstein Company, launched last year with an initial focus on VOD and emerging platforms. While the label has not yet decided on “Expatriate’s” rollout plan, pic will get both a theatrical and digital release.

I, Frankenstein, starring Aaron Eckhart and Bill Nighy, set to roll

by Brendan Swift

Local horror film I, Frankenstein is set to begin its 10-week shoot in Victoria next week.

The story, based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux which picks up where Mary Shelley’s classic novel finishes, follows Dr. Frankenstein’s creature (Aaron Eckhart) into a present day, gothic metropolis, where he is drawn into a power struggle between two immortal clans.

The film, which stars Eckhart (The Dark Knight), Bill Nighy (Underworld), Miranda Otto (South Solitary), Yvonne Strahovski (Killer Elite) and Socratis Otto (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), will begin production on February 27.

I, Frankenstein writer/director Stuart Beattie said in a statement: “Mary Shelley’s story is about the creation of the first human being. I, Frankenstein is the story about that being becoming human.”

The film is being produced by US-based Lakeshore Entertainment and Australia’s Hopscotch Features. The film is expected to be released in late-2012.

Video: 2011 Savannah Film Festival Perspective – Aaron Eckhart

Here’s a great video of Aaron from the Savannah Film Fest talking about his career and what makes a good film.

Video: 2011 Savannah Film Festival closes with honors for Aaron Eckhart and filmmakers

Thank you to Margarita for sending this in!

Actor Aaron Eckhart accepted an Outstanding Achievement in Cinema Award. “Many have called him an actor’s actor,” said Danny Filson, the festival’s executive director, in presenting the award.

Eckhart said he once worked with Morgan Freeman. “Every word out of his mouth was perfect,” he said. “Take after take, it was flawless.”

When Eckhart asked Freeman how he did it, Freeman simply replied, “Thirty years.”

“I’m halfway there,” Eckhart said. “After 30-plus movies, I continue to ask, ‘How do you do it? How do you reach perfection?’”

Earlier in the day, Eckhart said he will be filming “The Drummer” on Tybee Island next summer. In it he will play Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys.

Like Wilson, Eckhart himself was a surfer, until his family moved to England for his father’s work. While living overseas gave him life experience to draw on in his acting career, it came at an inopportune time.

“I was just going into the eighth grade when we moved to England,” Eckhart said. “I was just getting interested in girls and sports.”

But while there, Eckhart discovered acting when he auditioned for a school play and got the lead role of Charlie Brown.

Eckhart plans to teach a master class at the Savannah College of Art and Design when he returns next summer. He recently spoke to students at Harvard about the film industry.

“It’s helpful for students to hear it coming from a professional,” Eckhart said. “I majored in theater and got the degree. I feel I give them the perfect advice.”

With credits for films as varied as “Erin Brockovich,” “The Company of Men,” “Thank You for Smoking,” “Rabbit Hole,” “The Missing,” “Battle: Los Angeles” and “The Dark Knight,” Eckhart truly is a good source for inside information.

He encourages students to pursue their dreams. Eckhart himself hopes to someday write screenplays and direct.

“I have a love-hate relationship with acting,” Eckhart said. “I’d like to abandon acting altogether and be much more involved in the subject matter.”

An Interview with Prince Charming, I mean, Aaron Eckhart

Note: Best headline ever!

by Andrea Goto

Sure Aaron Eckhart was brilliant as a tobacco lobbyist in Thank You for Smoking and he provided Batman with his most formidable foe in The Dark Knight. But if anyone’s interested—and I think you should be—Eckhart is born to play the role of Prince Charming.

He is full of charm and ease. Before he even speaks, I want to crawl into his dimples and take a nap. Or tousle his dark blond, freeform hair. But in the name of professionalism I instead welcome him to Savannah and get down to business. Showbiz, that is.

AE: I’m doing a movie here next year so I’ll get to know Savannah better. It’s called The Drummer. It’s a story about Dennis Wilson [of the Beach Boys].

What drew you to Dennis Wilson’s story?

AE: It’s an amazing script. A script that’s full of life—ups and downs—so much emotion. Passion. You know, it’s rock and roll and everyone wants to play a hard drinking, hard partying, rock and roller. And that was Dennis Wilson. He lived life one hundred percent at all times and that ended up killing him. And he produced his own great music in the interim, so it’ll be an interesting movie.

How do you go about choosing your roles?

AE: I have no concept of what I should do. I guess you can boil it all down to when you’re reading a script. Some scripts you read and there’s no feeling—you’re reading words. Some you read and you’re already just seeing yourself in them. Your five senses are just firing. You’re in the role. You see yourself in the role. You hear yourself saying those words. Those are the scripts you’ve got to take. Other scripts you go to because of the quality people you’re working with. You know, if Nicole Kidman calls you up, you probably should do it.

And other [roles] you take for complete selfish reasons, which is: ‘I want to be an action hero. I want to be the drummer. I want to play rock ‘n’ roll and I want to be a cowboy.’ Or let’s say a girl you like is doing [a movie]—a girl you admire. She’s a good actor. You might say, ‘Let’s find something together.’ So there’s no really rhyme or reason.
